How a domain works

The life of a domain, from search to renewal.

A domain is a registration you hold for a term, not a thing you buy once. The diagram shows the states it can be in, and the table lists the rules that apply.

Search

The name is checked against the registry through our registrar. A name is either free, taken, or reserved by the registry.

Register

You are recorded as the registrant for the term you choose. A .ca domain also records the Canadian presence category you qualify under.

Active

The domain resolves through its nameservers. You control the DNS records, and the registrar lock blocks transfer requests until you remove it.

Renewal

Notices are sent before the expiry date. With auto-renew on, the term is extended and the invoice paid from the method on file.

Grace period

After expiry the domain stops resolving, but for most extensions it can still be renewed at the normal price for a set number of days.

Redemption and release

After the grace period the registry holds the name for a short time, and restoring it costs a fee. Then it is deleted and opened to the public.

ItemHow it works hereWhy it matters
RegistrantYou, with your own contact details on the registry record. The legal holder of the name is the person who uses it.
.ca eligibilityCIRA Canadian Presence Requirements: citizens, permanent residents, Canadian corporations and partnerships, Canadian trademark owners and other listed categories.A .ca tells visitors the business is Canadian.

Registrar lockTransfer lock on the domain until you remove it in the client portal.A transfer cannot start without you.
TransfersAuthorization (EPP) code from the current registrar, domain unlocked, and at least 60 days since registration or the last transfer for most extensions.Moving registrars does not interrupt the website.
RenewalNotices before expiry, with optional auto-renew in the client portal. The usual way domains are lost is a missed renewal.

With every domain

Eight things that come with a domain registered here.

A domain is cheap to buy and expensive to lose. These are the parts that decide whether it stays yours and stays pointed at the right place.

You are the registrant

The registry record carries your name and contact details. If you ever move to another provider, transfer the domain yourself from the client portal, or ask us and we do it with you.

All three prices published

Register, transfer and renewal prices for every extension are in the table on this page, in Canadian dollars.

DNS management

Edit the zone yourself in the client portal, with A, AAAA, CNAME and TXT records, or point the nameservers at another DNS provider.

Renewal notices and auto-renew

Notices are sent before the expiry date, and auto-renew can be switched on in the portal so a missed message does not cost you the name.

Registrar lock

A lock on the domain that blocks transfer requests until you switch it off, which is the main protection against domain theft.

Transfers in

Bring a domain from another registrar with its authorization code. For most extensions the transfer price includes one more year added to the term.

One client portal

Domains, hosting, invoices and support tickets under one login, with the expiry date of every name on one screen.

Connected for you

When the website is hosted with us, we point the domain at it and issue the SSL certificate as part of the setup.

The renewal price is not hidden

A cheap first year can hide an expensive second one. The renewal column in the table is what you will pay every year after the first.

How it works

From search to a working domain in four steps.

Registration is done online in the client portal. Most extensions become active within minutes of payment, and a few registries take longer.

01

Search the name

Type the name you want. The search checks it on our most-used extensions at once and shows which are free, with the first-year and renewal price of each.

Search

02

Register it in your name

Choose the term and enter the registrant details in the client portal. For a .ca domain you also confirm how you meet the Canadian presence requirement.

Register

03

Point it at your site

Set the DNS records, or let us do it when the site is hosted with us. The SSL certificate is issued once the domain resolves to the server.

Connect

04

Keep it renewed

Switch on auto-renew, keep the registrar lock on, and keep the contact address on the domain current, because that is where expiry and transfer notices go.

Questions

What owners ask about domain registration.

If yours is not here, the full list is one click away, or just pick up the phone.

Still have a question?

Call us on a weekday, or send a note and we will get back to you within one business day.

Who owns the domain when I register it through WebCrafters?

You own the domain. You are entered as the registrant, which is the legal holder of the name at the registry, and we are the reseller you manage it through. To move it to another registrar, unlock it and request its authorization code in the client portal, or ask us and we do it with you. Most extensions cannot move in the first 60 days after registration.

Who is allowed to register a .ca domain?

The .ca registry, CIRA, requires the registrant to meet its Canadian Presence Requirements. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, corporations and partnerships registered in Canada, and owners of a trademark registered in Canada all qualify, among other categories. You choose your category during registration, and CIRA can ask for proof.

How do I transfer a domain I already own?

Unlock it at your current registrar and ask them for the authorization code, also called an EPP code. Start the transfer in our client portal with that code and approve the confirmation request. Most extensions cannot be transferred in the first 60 days after registration or a previous transfer. The site keeps working throughout as long as the DNS records are not changed.

What happens if I forget to renew my domain?

The domain stops resolving, so the website goes offline. Most extensions then enter a grace period in which you can still renew at the normal price, followed by a redemption period in which getting it back costs a restore fee on top. After that the name is released and anyone can register it. The length of both periods and the fee are listed per extension in the pricing table. Auto-renew avoids all of it.

Why is the domain renewal price different from the first-year price?

Registries often discount the first year of newer extensions to attract registrations, then charge the standard rate from the second year on. That is their pricing, passed through. It is why the table shows the register and renewal price side by side, and why the search results state both before you order.

How often are the domain prices on this page updated?

The domain prices on this page are updated every day. The table and the search results read from a copy of our registrar pricing that is refreshed daily, so they match what the client portal cart charges. If the two ever differ, the cart is the price that applies.
